JOHNSON, Pierre

Freelance senior consultant, specialized in sustainable value chain development in a changing and complex environment.

With more than 20 years of experience in the coordination and support to agri-food and commodity supply chains, Pierre Johnson approaches value chain analysis & development with a focus on sustainability and complexity management issues. Trained in development economics at Paris 7 University, M Sc and associate professor in ecological economics at Versailles University for 3 years, he has extensive field experience as a projet manager and consultant for agrifood value chain development in Mexico, Guatemala, Brasil, Africa and South-East Asia, as well as facilitating international and multistakeholder communities of practice related to fair trade and social economy.

Cultural and environmental issues are essential parameters in biotrade (related to biodiversity and traditional knowledge), under the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Pierre Johnson manages with dexterity the interface between those issues and value chain development, through stakeholder dialogue facilitation and capacity development. He has also recently contributed to TEEB (The Economics of Ecosystem and Biodiversity) AgriFood publications.

He has applied the Value Links approach since acting as lead consultant for GIZ in Nepal (2012) and in Togo (2018), in combination with the tools of ecological economics and complexity thinking.
